For a long time, Korea's scientific community has avoided engaging with the creationists in fear that doing so might give the movement more credibility. The silence is no longer an option.

The STR has been battling to remove content from textbooks that explain evolution, such as the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an ancestral bird's ancestor. But this is merely one aspect of the evolution of the development paradigm.

What is Evolution?

Evolution is a concept in science that explains changes in genetic characteristics over time. The theory is based upon the fact that living organisms adjust to their environment, which could result in changes to genes or even whole genomes. These changes can, over generations result in the development of new species. The prevailing theory of evolution is natural selection, which describes the process that allows individuals with advantageous characteristics survive and reproduce more often than those with less favorable characteristics. Over time, this differential reproduction could lead to the emergence of entirely new species.

The term "evolution" is derived from the Latin word meaning unrolling or revealing, but the concept itself has had many different meanings since it took shape in the sciences and in other fields. Early evolutionists, such as Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather) believed that the existing species evolved into new species in a predetermined fashion. The term"transmutation" was coined by Lamarck's student embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, to describe this idea. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, attacked the concept of evolution and borrowed the term from Geoffroy’s student.

Evolutionary biologists define evolution more recently as a process through which living things develop characteristics that increase their chances of surviving or conceiving offspring. Over time, genetic variability can cause a population to develop new physical traits or biological functions. Such a variation in gene frequencies is known as natural selection and is the primary driver behind evolutionary change. However non-genetic changes like the growth in muscle mass from diet or exercise can't be considered examples of evolution because they are not inherited by future generations.

Creationists make the argument that evolution is controversial, despite the fact that it has been proven valid by a multitude of scientific tests and that it has been tested over time. OECs might not be as popular however their beliefs are just as passionate as the YECs. OECs believe that the universe and all life on Earth are billions of years old, and that evolution is an untruth.

Both forms of creationism deny that scientific theories such as natural selection and abiogenesis could explain the origin of life on Earth. They claim that evolution is not possible because it requires miracles. The founders of modern scientific thought resisted miracles in fear that they might lose their credibility.

Some creationists accept naturalistic evolution as well as special creation, and call their view “theistic evolution." This is also referred to as "continuous evolutionism" or the "evolution of species created." This theory states that God creates the original species and allows them to evolve over time. Eventually these evolutionary changes will create new species that are like the original ones.

Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the entire universe in one event known as the Great Flood. They believe that all the species of the beginning were created at the same moment and that they gradually evolved. They also reject the idea of abiogenesis and argue that the emergence of self-replicating organisms from nonliving matter is unattainable.

In general, creationists are opposed to the teaching of evolution in schools. This position is supported by a variety of professional organizations which include the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education as well as the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. However, some researchers and educational institutions are more flexible, and allow for the inclusion of creationism and evolution in their curriculum.

What is Creationism?

When people think of creationism most often, they think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolution group. Publishers of high school textbooks have recently announced that they will remove references to evolution from their textbooks. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent body which is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR), has led this campaign. STR has won its first victory in taking away instances of the evolution of the horse as well as an avian ancestor, called the Archeopteryx, from textbooks. It is now focusing on the removal of excerpts from Darwin's infamous finch research and on human evolution, too.

STR claims that it has the support of around 4,000 families and individuals. Its goal, it says is to cleanse the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" which portrays a negative view for students. It also seeks to counter the influence of American Creationists in the United States. A survey of trainee biology teachers found that about half do not believe in the concept of evolution. The reasons for this aren't entirely evident, but they could be due to religious beliefs or the lack of creation scientists in the country.

The KACR has achieved many things through its seminars and lectures. It publishes a bimonthly news magazine, Creation, and has published books. One of these was a textbook on natural science that had a creationist perspective. It sparked interest in the college community. In 1991, a professor, along with a minister began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught to students today.

On August 6 and 7, 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. It was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six lecturers from abroad, including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin, spoke to a crowd of more than a thousand. KACR and its members have given lectures on creation science in major seminaries, too. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center in the future.
